Job leads, News, and Conversations with Those Who Write and Edit

Just trying to get in a few coherent thoughts before NaNoWriMo starts up. I probably won't be blogging much, although I've now committed to posting some updates on my progress on all my blogs and FB and Twitter. Chances are they'll be identical updates, but people will have to check to see.

I'd love to know if anyone on this site has done or is doing NaNoWriMo. If you did, how did it work out for you? I've heard some amazing stories. I've heard that some of the novels written have been published. Anyone with an experience to share?

Traditionally it's been said that if you talk too much about your story, you'll never write it. Part of NaNoWriMo is the mutual commiserating and sharing about your progress. This usually leads to talking about the material. So... are we in danger of just speaking words and not writing them down? What do you think? Do the stories you tell while they're wips evaporate before they hit the page?

And finally, about this public commitment thing.... does it make it harder or easier to attain the goal? It's not exactly the same as having a commission or an assigned article. There is no contract except for the one you make with yourself, in front of witnesses like family and co-workers. Do you, like an athlete, train harder, run longer, push yourself farther? Or do you in your bravado tackle something beyond your means and have to bow out? What do you think happens? Please share.
