A fascination with the English language and the flash of magic I felt the first time I put a story to paper have led me, over the years, to writing articles for house organs and business/technical publications as well as ad copy. I've also experienced the hair-pulling delight of copy/content editing other authors' books. Some of my short stories have accidentally made it to publication and I hope to duplicate those results with the novel I'm currently writing. Someday I’d like to make a living at writing (ahem).
My brother answered the part about Brooklyn, and said he'll need a bit more time on the other half of your question:
"The nearest subway stop is Brooklyn College/Flatbush Avenue on the number 2 train. They can use the number 2 train to go to the Brooklyn Museum and the The Botanic Gardens at the Eastern Parkway Stop; two shopping centers and the Brooklyn Academy of Music at the Atlantic Avenue stop; the World Trade Center at the Cortlandt Street stop; Herald Square stop for Macy's, the Empire
State Building, Madison Square Garden, etc; and Times Square stop for the theatre district and the like.
I lived in the City long ago. Where you're talking about actually depends on the culture you're interested in. In lower Manhattan, you have the Chinese, other Asians, Chassidim (very Orthodox Jews), and Italians, for the most part. In Brooklyn, it depends on what part as well. Crown Heights is known for the Chassidic Jewish population, but there is an interweaving throughout Brooklyn, from the Chassidim to the Black population, from the Black to the Koreans, then you move to the Chinese and Jewish population (not the ultraOrthodox this time, but the Conservative). My older brother lives in lower Manhattan and has been there many years.
I'll give you a caution, however, if you have never been there and haven't lived there, it's really not wise to try to piece together what daily life is like there. A lot depends on your culture.
So why NYC, specifically lower Manhattan and Brooklyn?
Yes, upstate. We had a bit of a ruckus here two months ago, in fact, when a Vietnamese immigrant massacred 13 people and wounded several others before killing himself at the American Civic Association. (I trust you didn't mean the City. :) )
How funny, Kevin! I've found a total of 87 Michelle Youngs online since I came online in 1995. There must be even more now. Nope, sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not the one you're looking for. I lived in AZ for 10 ungodly years, and am happily back on the East coast. I've never been to California--yet--although I am on the editorial panel of a magazine there, and the publisher of my first book is there.
