Yeah Steven, I don't know any writer who hasn't been in that dilemma! When I left college some time ago I started out as a freelance writer and got some good assignments but then it dried up and I wasn't prepared for the hustle of profesisonal writing. I went into some other professions and decided that you either play to the market or don't. I didn't want to so I took on a "writing life," rather than a "writing profession." It's possible to make a living from professional writing but you have to be very commited to it and try to get a plan in front of you as soon as possible. And that plan would include the type of writing you want to do, the type of markets you want to try and write for, the amount of money you need to make, the habits of writing and publishing you need to develop among other things. I wouldn't get discouraged. There's an old quote somewhere, "writing is the only activity where you don't make money but still have your pride." Something like that.

I wouldn't get discouraged at all.

Hey everybody! I just joined the writer's network today. I guess you could label me as another starving artist. I've been dreaming of working as a writer all my life. In the past I've written short stories, poems, essays, and one novel. I had a couple poems published and some articles for a a community newspaper but haven't come close to starting a career. I recently graduated college with a Bachelor's degree in, what else, English! So far it's been pretty tough finding and even deciding what to do for work. So here I am, ready to exchange ideas with people who are hopefully somewhat familiar with my dilemma.

Sorry I've been neglecting this for awhile. I'm really trying to understand how to use this platform for the maximum benefit of the members. In the future much of the writing business will be conducted this way, with agents, writers, editors, publishers and all others involved in these sort of networks. So, if anyone has an idea please chirp up!

Eric's question about writing on the internet is an interesting one. There are many blogging opportunities and copywriting opps. on the internet. The thing to do Eric is to assess yourself and your writing. You need to have some goal in your writing life. What type of writing do you do? It matters whether it is fiction or non-fiction. Write a mission statement for yourself and then focus all your research online to that mission statement. I would always consult the jobs at sunoasis.com and other places just to get an idea of what is available. Many of the online jobs are low-paying but you can quickly build up a portfolio that will help your career. The best thing is just to jump-in and then scramble to figuure out how the market works and the requirements to get anywhere in the writing profession. Start small. Start with what you know.

Hi All,
Just joined the network today, the day after my birthday...don't ask...I'm really old. I have a blog, which I've neglected recently, but I've found it a good way to write something every day. I've found you've just got to keep writing...and reading to keep the creativity going. Good luck to all the writers here on getting the best writing jobs. Keep writing.
